Criteria for associate membership
Applicants must provide evidence of:
- Experience: A minimum of 60% of their time over the last 10 years devoted to practice, research, or teaching in at least one element of the specialty.
- Publications and Conferences: A relevant number of publications and/or contributions (Typically 10), with clear evidence of their impact within the field of veterinary sports medicine and rehabilitation.
- Facilities: Employment in a setting that provides access to facilities of a sufficient standard to support practice, education, and/or research in the specialty at an appropriate level.
- Proposed Contribution to the College: A willingness to contribute to resident training (for example, by hosting externships in the specialty) and an explanation of how their expertise will support the advancement and enhancement of the College.
- Evidence of good standing: Endorsement by two ECVSMR Diplomates, who can support the applicant and provide firsthand knowledge of the candidate’s suitability.
Application Requirements
The application must include:
- A covering Letter including evidence of the following:
- Career highlights.
- Relevant experience (scholarly, clinical, legal, or political) at an appropriate level equivalent to EQF level 8
- Contributions to the specialty (clinical, education, research, or service). The applicant should select FIVE of their most significant contributions and provide a brief statement of impact (≤250 words each) for each. Contributions may include:
- Clinical: experience, case series.
- Research outputs published in appropriate peer reviewed journals
- Teaching: contributions at national or international level.
- Service: contributions to a national or international organization (governmental or multinational).
Applicants should also explain what they will bring to the College and how they intend to contribute to the development of the specialty, for example through resident training.
- Evidence of good standing:
- Letters of Support from two ECVSMR Diplomates (to be sent directly to the ECVSMR Credentials Committee) documenting a detailed understanding of the work of the applicant
- Self declaration by the applicant that:
- They are in good professional standing within their country of residence and practice, with no current suspensions, sanctions, or disciplinary actions from any professional, regulatory, or licensing authority.
- They are committed to the delivery of evidence-based veterinary care in sports medicine and rehabilitation, in accordance with current scientific standards and ethical principles.
Rights and Benefits of Associate Membership
Associate Members are valued contributors to the advancement of veterinary sports medicine and rehabilitation. Their role carries both privileges and limitations, which protect the integrity of the College.
- Associate Members may contribute to resident training by delivering structured teaching or practical training within an approved ECVSMR training programme.
- Associate Members may not act as supervisors or programme directors of ECVSMR training programmes.
- Associate Members may not vote in College elections or hold elected office or chair committees
Restrictions on Use of Title
Associate Membership is a recognition of professional contribution to the field of veterinary sports medicine and rehabilitation. It is not a specialist qualification, diploma, or certification.
- Associate Members must not use their ECVSMR Associate status in any professional marketing, advertising, or client-facing promotion.
- Any breach of this rule will result in immediate termination of Associate Membership, without warning or right of appeal.
This policy protects the integrity of the College while ensuring that Associate Membership remains a respected and meaningful recognition of service to the specialty.
